It’s our pleasure to introduce Angela on a getting-to-know-you interview! Angela adds much character, laughs and fun to our gym family and is a pleasure to coach. A very strong lady to boot! Angela has volunteered on many occasions to be team manager, driver, organizer, cheerleader, photographer, social media updater, etc etc on competition road weekends. My favorite Angela story is when she jumped into an empty spot at Battle of the North at the last minute and did awesome competing all weekend!
1. What do you do for a living?
I am a business consultant for a IT company called DeltaWare Systems. That’s just a fancy way of saying I solve problems, or create solutions, for clients. This problem solving includes a lot of sitting at a desk or meeting table, and coffee.
2. How did you get involved in CrossFit and how long have you been CrossFitting?
I have been involved with CrossFit for about 4 years now.
3. What are some of your goals in doing CrossFit?
My current CrossFit goal is to get back to the basics and focus on proper execution of standard movements (cleans, etc) so my Olympic lifts can increase. Another big goal is to dial in my nutrition, so I can further see physical results of all of these hours spent in the gym.
4. Biggest challenges and rewards of coming to the gym?
My biggest challenge does not happen inside of the gym. It happens outside of the gym – nutrition. It’s no lie whenever they tell you that you can’t out-train poor nutrition. Sugar is actually evil, and an addiction. It is great to have an awesome support system at the gym to help support you with this.
There are so many rewards of coming to the gym. Watching your body transform, along with gaining significant strength (as a female) is a pretty awesome thing to experience. By just showing up and putting in the effort, these rewards happen. However – the rewards of CrossFit are not limited to physical rewards. One of the biggest rewards I have received from CrossFit are the amazing friendships I have gained along the way. Another thing worth mentioning is the mental workout that CrossFit provides – this transfers to life outside the gym as well. CrossFit not only prepares and conditions you for physical challenges, but mental ones as well.
5. Any results you would care to share?
Taking CrossFit to the competitive level has been something that I have really enjoyed. If you would have told anyone (myself, family, friends) that I would be participating in competitions that included weights, barbells, burpees, running (basically any physical activity in general!!) we all would have laughed you out of the room.
CrossFit has awakened some sort of ‘Sporty Spice’ that has transitioned me to being more active outside of the gym as well, and has pushed me to check some things off of my ‘activity bucket list’ that I would have never dreamed I would have attempted.
6. Favorite workout or movement?
My favourite named workout is Grace.
My favourite movements are clean and jerk, back squats, and deadlifts.
7. Least favorite workout or movement?
My least favourite workout is anything that has running involved with it.
My least favourite movement is anything to do with running. In any capacity. Short runs, long runs, medium runs…all of the running.
8. Favorite music/song to CF to?
Any kind of 90’s playlist or music that gets us moving 😉
9. Anything else you would like to add?
CrossFit has taught me that fitness CAN be fun. It doesn’t have to be a chore, or something that you dread doing. Prior to CrossFit, I had limited involvement with fitness – gym, sports, general activity, etc. I habitually “forgot” my gym clothes for gym class in school and was elated once Grade 11 came along and gym was no longer a required subject. Since high school, I dabbled in a few Pilates, yoga, and bootcamp class, but never stuck with anything.
I enjoy myself each and every day I am in the gym. This is indicative of not just the CrossFit program itself, but CrossFit Charlottetown as a whole. There is something that is just so awesome about coming in to a space every day where you know it is going to be a positive experience with really great people. The community that we have at CrossFit Charlottetown is something that is really special. This community includes some awesome WOD warriors that I train with, but the coaches are also what makes this community extra awesome. Their continued support and dedication to the gym, and us members, is really something special.
